Rotary Engine Resources

2010 RX-8

By Manntis January 25, 2010

The 2010 Mazda RX-8 carries forward its recent makeover, keeping the 2nd generation RENESIS rotary engine, world-renown handling and four-door flexibility. Updates over the 1st gen RX-8 include dual outlet exhaust, LED taillamps, widened fenders and large alloy wheels wearing performance rubber. As before, the body cleverly hides a secondary set of doors that access the rear portion of the cabin. Xenon projector high intensity discharge headlamps gives the RX-8 modern high performance lighting.

The R3 model adds a special wheel design, taller rear spoiler and subtle body kit.

The 1.3 litre multi side-port RENESIS rotary engine powering all models varies slightly in horsepower from country to country depending on emissions requirements and transmission option. In the US, the standard 6 speed manual transmission versionĀ  develops a peak of 232 horsepower, sent to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential.

All RX-8 models are equipped with advanced front, side and curtain airbags working alongside a crushable pedal system for maximum protection in a crash. To help keep drivers in control, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and a Traction Control System (TCS) are available.

Inside, drivers are treated to a set of hip-hugging leather seats, a large, centre-mounted tachometer, and a flow-through centre console that houses cupholders and storage compartments. Bose audio is available.
